Nelo

The Nelo brand was founded in 1978 by Manuel Alberto Ramos, who is still the owner and actively involved in the company. At the time of its founding, the application of composite technologies was still in its early stages compared to today, but over the years, the company has acquired exceptional expertise. From the beginning, the company has focused on ensuring that innovation is present in all aspects of its operations. Every model that goes into production is preceded by extensive research and development, covering not only the design of the boats but also their fittings, materials, layers, and manufacturing technologies. Nelo has been working closely with the Hydrodynamics Department at the University of Porto since its inception to ensure the boats are perfect. Typically, prototype boats are followed by live testing and experimentation after university experiments and design phases. These tests are crucial, as they are the only way to perfect the actual behavior of the boats. Most of the time, the development team receives direct feedback from top athletes, using this information to refine the boats. This dedication is significant because they believe that the invested effort will ultimately be reflected in stopwatch times and the number of medals won.

Furthermore, Nelo provides 100% support to athletes at major international competitions. Top athletes recognize Nelo's huge truck from afar, accompanied by a large tent where the Nelo team works to address all the athletes' needs and questions, allowing them to focus solely on performing at their best.

These efforts are among the reasons why Nelo boasts outstanding international results. In the realm of sprint boats, athletes using Nelo boats have won nearly 120 Olympic medals and countless World Championship medals. We believe that Nelo has set a direction for all participants in the sport with its unique philosophy. Owning a Nelo boat means being part of this philosophy and dedication, as each boat embodies extensive work, development, and expertise.

General Description of the Boats

Nelo sprint boats come in many types, but there are common features. One of the most important is customization. Since kayaking is a technical sport, it is crucial for the boat to adapt perfectly to the athlete, creating a seamless unit for maximum performance. Customers can choose from various specifications when ordering a boat, including construction, size, color, equipment, parts, and extras.

Constructions:

  • F: Carbon-reinforced, sandwich structure, vacuum-molded, with thermoset epoxy resin. A popular construction, offering a hard and rigid hull, recommended primarily for flatwater training and racing.

  • WWR: Carbon and Kevlar fabric, vacuum-molded, with epoxy resin. Recommended for river descents, marathon training, and sea use. Key features: rigidity and impact resistance.

  • G: Extra carbon-reinforced, sandwich structure, vacuum-molded, with thermoset epoxy resin. High quality for better performance.

  • E: Carbon/Kevlar structure, vacuum-molded, with thermoset epoxy resin. Specially developed for marathon use. Excellent balance of rigidity and light weight.

  • SCS: Built with extra-quality carbon and sandwich materials. Designed for maximum performance, with an extremely rigid construction. Ideal for international competitions, featuring high-quality finish with factory-included weights and a boat cover.

  • FC: Stands for Full Carbon. Similar to SCS boats, using only extra-quality carbon and sandwich materials. Nelo's latest development in terms of materials and manufacturing technology. Available only in clear (unpainted) color, using resin instead of paint for an even more rigid hull at the same weight range. New weight pockets at the front and rear allow for precise weight distribution, minimizing trimming. This construction also comes with a factory weight set and cover as standard.

Sizes:

Among flatwater kayak manufacturers, Nelo offers the widest range of boat sizes, enabling the most optimal choice based on the athlete's weight, height, and build.

Equipment:

Optimal use of the boats requires precise adjustments for maximum customization. Nelo offers an exceptionally wide range of options. The variety of seats, footrests, and other accessories available for the boats is unique. These parts are not only interchangeable but also offer nearly infinite adjustment possibilities. Nelo parts are also compatible with models made even 20 years ago. Compatibility extends between single and team boats, so the setup for a K1 can be precisely matched to the front position of a K2 or K4, and the rear setup of a K2 can fit the 2-3-4 positions of a K4. This means that athletes can often simply transfer their precisely adjusted footrests and seats from their single boat to a team boat and start training immediately with familiar comfort and settings.

Colors:

Nelo offers a vast selection of colors as standard, whether solid colors or custom stripe designs from the basic price list. If a customer has additional custom design needs, Nelo is also open to realizing them. The number of possibilities for custom designs is endless, limited only by the boat's construction.

Ideas can be found on the website of Nelo's partner, www.paddlesportsdesign.com.

Nelo Cinco

In 2014, Nelo introduced a boat with a radically new bow design, preceded by extensive research into applying a proven sailing form to kayaking. The kayak's bow and stern were both innovative in appearance. Beyond the visible differences, the new design included other innovations. The hull design made the kayak more stable compared to previous forms without losing much top speed. The newfound stability allows athletes to invest more power and energy into their strokes, as less attention is needed for balancing. Vertical movement (trimming) is negligible, while lateral movement is easier due to the flatter hull bottom.
